You see the word perfect being thrown around a lot willy nilly these days, and in almost every instance it’s bullshit. But you can trust me when I say this video from Marina and the Diamonds for the acoustic version of her song “Happy” is what the word was meant to imply.
The song, from Marina’s upcoming third album, Froot, is a gently swaying tear-jerker that tones down her characteristic cheeky bubble-gum pop in air quotes for a more sober approach. And, as befitting its Platonic ideal stature, the song finds her working her way toward a state of perfection of her own. “I found what I’d been looking for in myself,” she sings. “Found a life worth living for someone else. Never thought that I could be happy.”
