Nothing says “buy this sugary carbonated beverage” like Kendall Jenner evoking a bunch of historic protest imagery… or at least that’s what the dum dums at Pepsi were thinking when they made this ludicrously tone-deaf ad (which, by the way, definitely cost them a fortune). The 2-minute disaster culminates in Jenner handing the hottest cop on the force a can of soda, which, obviously, solves anything. Of course, soda! Why didn’t we think of that?!
Naturally, twitter went bananas and less than 24 hours after the ad hit the internet, it’s being pulled (you can see the worst of it here). Pepsi had this to say in a statement:
Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are removing the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position.
Oh, thank heavens they apologized to Kendall Jenner, because “poor Kendall!” is the first thing we were all thinking. Luckily I’m already Coke loyal.
