There simply aren’t enough opportunities in today’s digitally dominated world to celebrate and support each other in physical spaces. A comment, a share, a like—they’re all only so meaningful, but championing our deserving friends face-to-face is something screens will never replace. Tonight, one of our favorite faces and spirits in New York culture, Maya Monès, will bring people together to party with purpose at Cinco De Maya, the ultimate fund-rager.
From 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Wyndham Hotel’s Wu Room Lounge & Biergarten, 93 Bowery, guests are invited to come support Monès’ transition with $5 minimum at-door donations all going straight toward funding her Facial Feminization Surgery. The event will feature DJ sets from NAR, ITYS, Bearcat, HD and Serena Jara, as well as a live performance from AHSH EFF. Johmaris Ramos will also be on-site, creating live sketches for suggested donations.
“When I look in the mirror, I don’t see the Maya that I see in my head, which is unbelievably frustrating and exhausting,” Monès explained. “My biggest dream is to one day feel comfortable in my own skin and if I can have that, I can do anything. I’ve decided that the next step in my journey is FFS (Facial Feminization Surgery), which is a step that many trans women take to soften our features and present what we have been wishing to see in our reflections. This is a necessary step to live my life happily which is all I want from it, truly. Like many other aspects of transitioning, FFS is something that is very costly and I realized I simply can’t win this crucial fight alone.”
For those outside of New York, Monès has created an online fundraiser to help reach a $25,000 goal. Her dream procedures include forehead reconstruction, rhinoplasty, genioplasty and a trachea shave, all of which come with a daunting, but attainable, price tag. Support, support, support.
