Anyone who grew up watching Oprah knows that the talk show legend is adept at two things: yo-yo dieting and making viewers cry. So it’s little surprise that Oprah’s new Weight Watchers UK commercial is a masterful one-minute sobfest.
“Inside every overweight woman is a woman she knows she can be,” she begins. She’s seated, inexplicably, in the middle of a forest, clad in soothing earth tones and bathed on soft light, looking like the unthreatening angel that she is. “Many times you look in the mirror and you don’t even recognize your own self because you got lost, buried, in the weight that you carry.” There are cutaways to Oprah waving to camera and working out, at various weights. The graininess is undoubtedly amplified to induce feelings of nostalgia – it works.
It’s probably no coincidence that Oprah’s emotional message comes during the holidays, when folks are gearing up to break their New Years resolutions, their bellies still full from Christmas dinner. Oprah get’s that; she’s a businesswoman who specializes in emotional warfare. And she paid millions of that Oprah cash for a 10% stake in Weight Watchers back in October.
Oprah continues: “Nothing you’ve ever been through is wasted, so every time I tried and failed, every time I tried again, and every time I tried again, has brought me to this most powerful moment to say, ‘If not now, when?’ I feel that way, and I know millions of other people feel that way. Are you ready? Let’s do this together.”
Yasssss Oprah! Yas! I’m in. Let’s do this. Where do I sign? What do I owe? With your strength I can move mountains.
