It’s a pretty well established fact that teens are universally dumb, and that’s particularly true during times of emotional upheaval. So perhaps it’s understandable that so many of them, still reeling from the news that Zayn Malik has abruptly left One Direction were looking for some positive news anywhere they could find it. The “new song” from Malik, posted sometime over the weekend, was not the solace they needed.

Perhaps the voice message addressed to “Cam” at the end of the track, or the part where he raps about being from Boston might’ve been a tip off, but, you know, poetic license I suppose. At last check the video, now taken down, was at around 200,000 plays. Definitely not bad publicity for Meekins. Whether or not it was the work of an enterprising marketer on his team, or just a goofy bit of trolling from a bored fan isn’t clear at this point. We’ve reached out to Meekins for a comment. [UPDATE: “This was not our doing at all,” Meekins wrote in an email. “Shit is weird. We’re looking into it from a copyright perspective as well, that’s all we can really say.”

Since then, as you can see above, dozens, perhaps hundreds by now, of different songs purporting to be from Malik are all over YouTube. They are also fake. But perhaps there could be a good lesson in this for One Direction fans out there: there are actually very many other musicians in the world. You might consider also listening to them.
