Elisha Cuthbert, famous actress from television and movies, stars in this new video “Here Comes My Man” from the professional rock and roll band The Gaslight Anthem, a fact that’s important to point out right at the top here because otherwise I never would have watched the thing. Good move on the band’s part, having a pretty woman whose visage I associate with fond memories of previous entertainments walk around in front of a camera and then subsequently editing that footage with bits of them performing the song in question, because now I’ve listened to it a couple times. (Same thing with that Michelle Williams Wild Nothing video we just posted about). There’s a basic psychological salesmanship technique known as “just get the fuckers in the door” that holds true for everyone from car salesman to retail box stores to that dude pointing a toothpick of meat in the general direction of your face as you’re walking down the sidewalk outside his restaurant, and that’s what we’ve got going on here. You lead with the actress/General Gao’s chicken bouquet/ %15 off toilet paper, and then just let God and the natural process of human fallibility take its course. Once you’ve smuggled us into the sales-zone we’re probably going to buy something once we’re there, even if buying something means just listening to your musical product enough times that we end up tolerating it. It’s a well known fact that you only need to hear any song, no matter how middling and insignificant, and this song certainly fits that description, before you show it your quivering belly, and now, here we are three or four listens later, and this thing doesn’t really sound so bad after all, does it. It’s almost like they planned it this way.
