Ofelia K Talks New EP, Mixes Prince-Funk and Banjo Twang On ‘Hawk Fly Tiger Run’

“‘Hawk Fly Tiger Run’ was one of the first songs I made for my EP and it felt like a real turning point musically,” Ofelia K tells us of her new song, the last to premiere from her Plastic Flower, out today. “It’s always hard for me to describe this song to people,” she says, as it’s truly loaded with disparate styles. “I know there’s a lot going on: Prince funk grooves, banjo twangs, playful guitars and deliberate pop programming, but the song really feels like me and it helped map the course of the rest of the EP.”

It’s a new, compelling direction from Ofelia’s previous work, where you may have heard her as the singer of the group Wanderhouse, and lending vocals to Felix Cartel’s dance hit “New Scene.”

“I love that the songs on Plastic Flower are a combination of a natural, organic world and a synthetic, electric one. They’re intentional, the space is just as important as the production elements. It took me a couple of years to really get this body of work right, so I’m beyond excited to finally put it out there.”
