New Yorkers and fashion fans were devastated after legendary photographer Bill Cunningham’s death on June 25. Now, city officials will honor the street style pioneer by renaming the intersection of 57th St. and 5th Ave., “Bill Cunningham Corner,” where Cunningham famously captured people on their daily commute.
After a petition for the tribute received more than 6,000 signatures, de Blasio decided to dedicate the intersection to New York’s most beloved photographer: “Bill Cunningham turned our sidewalks into runways and New Yorkers into models,” he said in a statement. “His vivid photos captured our city’s diversity in every sense of the word, and helped define New York as the fashion capital of the world.”
Although the official name change will be in place for only a week, 57th and 5th will forever be known as Bill’s.
