Balenciaga parent company PPR has just announced that they and Nicolas Ghesquière, the brand’s creative director of 15 years, have made the “joint decision to end their working relationship as of 30 November 2012.”
Ghesquière’s boss, PPR CEO, Francois-Henri Pinault made this statement:
“Cristóbal Balenciaga was a master, a genius whose avant-garde vision dictated fashion’s greatest trends and inspired generations of designers. With an incomparable creative talent, Nicolas has brought to Balenciaga an artistic contribution essential to the unique influence of the house.”
So far no word on what Ghesquière will be doing next or who will replace him.
My only word: NOOOOOOOOOOO! Really, this breaks my heart. There are few collections I looked forward to as much as Ghesquière for Balenciaga. It has been fifteen years, though, and while I’d selfishly take another three dozen (if Karl can do it…), I appreciate the importance of leaving on a high note. And Ghesquière couldn’t have left with anything higher than his Spring 2013 stiff ruffles.
