Speaking of Nicki Minaj: US Weekly reports that she’s in advanced negotiations to take over one of those absent American Idol judging positions, the ones vacated by Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. With Mariah Carey confirmed in one of those spots, and a potential third star on the way—US Weekly mentions Joe Jonas—it seems like a pretty clear upgrade in terms of quality and relevance. And, yeah, it’s American Idol, home of formulaic feel-good stories, schmaltzy arrangements, contrived guest appearances, and so forth. But Nicki isn’t just a big name—she’s both a respected artist and a singular personality, meaning that it might be a blast to watch her sift through the Idol hopefuls in the preliminary rounds. Or she can just affect her queen bee thing and storm out once an episode, but we’ll see. (I have to wonder whether Carey will go to new lengths to assert her dominance.) This is all grandly hypothetical, of course, at least until the report is made official, but speculating never hurt a thing. Meanwhile, have you checked out that mix?
