Following the release of their AW ’15 lookbook, “New Archetype,” NEWTHINGS has teamed up once more with Brooklyn-based producer Flex Lang to create the collection’s official soundscape, which Lang first unveiled during the brand’s presentation last February.
“The performance mixes freely between precomposed material and improvised/auto-generative material,” Lang said. “[It’s] sequenced on the fly like a DJ mix. I limited myself to using only my laptop for the performance, and tried to maximize its performative capabilities by using the built-in microphone as a sound source and coding my own software.”
The rising producer aimed to reflect NEWTHINGS’ aesthetic, which this season balances a classic, organic feel with something slightly futuristic. “I tried to capture that in the piece’s form by taking the listeners from organic to synthetic and then back to organic, ending with a recording I made at the beach,” he said.
