Male celebrities losing weight isn’t the same thing as female celebrities losing weight. Men don’t feel the same pressure to be thin as their female counterparts. They lost weight for regular reasons like health and insecurity. When Jonah Hill dropped a ton of lbs. a few years back, the general reaction was, “Can this guy be funny anymore?” People saw his weight as an asset (Hill, who has since gained some of that weight back, proved otherwise). We can imagine people saying the same thing about Zach Galifianakis, who made his first public appearance in a year over the weekend, looking considerably thinner. Galifianakis was attending the New York Film Festival’s closing night gala for his new film, Birdman, but did not look too happy to be on the red carpet. At the film’s press conference, he explained why:
“Being a celebrity is shit — it’s dumb, and I’m not interested in it. I like to be an actor, and that’s it. The blurred lines are, I think, man-made. I think celebrity is a man-made thing; it’s not innate in us…I’d rather just do my work and go home and watch Lifetime.”
Galifiankis expanded on those thoughts to The Hollywood Reporter:
It’s gotten a little out of hand — there’s no culture in it. If people were writing about poets, mathematicians and all that, that would just move us forward quicker.”
So everyone, meet the new Zach Galifianakis: an unfunny and ungrateful celebrity with a killer abs and a tight little ass.
