Could it be? Seems like NYPD officer Peter Liang will actually be the first police officer indicted in memory for killing an unarmed black male. Akai Gurley was shot in his East New York stairwell this past fall for…walking down the hallway. The 28-year-old was killed by Liang’s “accidental discharge,” according to Police Chief Bill Bratton. NY1 has a quote:
“This is the first step in the fight for justice for this wrongful death,” Scott Rynecki, the attorney representing Kimberly Ballinger, who was Gurley’s domestic partner.
Liang will be turning himself in tomorrow. Of the major cases of police violence in the last year–Mike Brown, Eric Ganrner, Tamir Rice–this is the one that seemed most like an actual accident. The charges are not yet clear, however.
