New Regulation Allows Transgender People to Access Preferred Federal Bathrooms

As a part of a new regulation under the Obama Administration, transgender men and women are now guaranteed access to the bathroom of their choice in all federal buildings.

According to Buzzfeed’s obtained documents of the new rule, this applies not only to the 1 million federal workers, but also visitors of any of the 9,200 government properties. “This includes all kinds of Americans,” said GSA spokeswoman Ashley Nash-Hahn. “We wanted to make clear that a person can use facilities that match their gender identity, and we think that’s a good thing.”

This isn’t the first time Obama has showed support of the transgender community. Earlier this year, the Obama administration began to enforce Title IX—a law that prevents government-funded institutions from discrimination based on gender, largely for the protection of trans students. Although transphobia is still very much so present, here’s to a step in the right direction.
