Depending on how you look at it, Madonna‘s Girl Gone Wild is either a trip down memory lane, or three minutes trapped inside a hexagonal tank of self-referentiality. Either way, it’s not a bad ride, and that’s pretty unexpected after the Gimme All Your Love video and its fake-breastfeeding. The Youtube-approved Ukranian Kazaky boys make an extended appearance in their signature heels and tights, and Madonna can’t seem to ditch her lacy hobo gloves (yet another way in which Downton Abbey just keeps creeping into fashion). But if this video truly belongs in the Madonna canon, it’s thanks to the campy, vintage-Madonna Christianity nods throughout, like her recital of the ‘acts of contrition’ speech at the beginning, and the crown of thorns one of the boys wears near the end. Though Madonna’s relationship with God may be considerably less complex than it was in earlier years, at least she can still milk him for some pretty evocative aesthetics.
