Bob Dylan may have won the Nobel Prize, but David Bowie is getting his own emojis—and emojis are now art, according to MoMA. Earlier this week, Apple announced 75 new emojis will be included in the new iOs update. Among them comes an avocado, face palm and Aladdin Sane.
The two “singer” emojis wear David Bowie’s signature lightning bolt, from the cover of his 1973 album, Aladdin Sane, as they sing with dead eyes into a microphone. One emoji, presenting as a girl, has a pink mullet to match her bolt, while the other, presenting as a boy, is decked out in red and blue.
Perhaps someone over at Apple was trying so hard to be hip, they missed the point of Aladdin Sane completely. Bowie was a magical non-binary being—neither boy nor girl—and he definitely wore blue, red and pink. Regardless, at least now the Thin White Duke will forever be immortalized in our phone screens.
R.I.P. you hot tramp, we love you so.
