Neneh Cherry, the Swedish performer best known for her 1988 hit “Buffalo Stance”, is set to release her first solo material in 18 years in Blank Project. Based on the first two tracks we’ve heard from the Four Tet-produced record, she probably could’ve used a little more time working on it.
You ever find yourself in the club and someone blasts the nastiest beef fart you’ve ever smelled, and you’re looking around trying to figure out who did it, but no one seems like an obvious answer, so you just end up storming out of there furious at everyone just for having been in the blast vicinity? That’s sort of how listening to “Everything” feels. It’s a clattering mess of a production that’s probably meant to be avant-eclectic and futuristic, but the caterwauling and cackling vocal track from Cherry nips that pretense in the bud real quick. It sounds like your mom doing Peaches karaoke at the reception back at the hotel after her fourth wedding.
Previous release “Blank Project” is more focused, but that’s not saying much.
Anyway, music is pretty hard.
