Mountain Dew Yanks ‘Racist’ Tyler, the Creator-Directed Ad

+

In an outcome that literally no one could have predicted, edgy goo-mongers Mountain Dew hired provocative and racially-controversial rapper Tyler, the Creator to direct a series of commercials for them and the results were provocative and racially controversial. Weird.

The corroded sugar straw that broke the goat’s back in this case came in the form of the commercial below, the third in a series, which adhered to what I typically refer to as the only three types of commercial templates available.  They are as follows: 1) The product is so great women will have sex with you if you buy it 2) The widely available product is somehow suddently in rare supply and therefore securing it is worth going insane over 3) The product is so great even animals like it!

The animal in this case is a criminal goat, who appears in a police lineup with a number of racially stereotypical criminals and proceeds to threaten and harras a waitress he had assaulted in a previous clip because her restaurant was out of Mountain Dew.

After a flurry of protests, including this one “Mountain Dew Releases Arguably the Most Racist Commercial in History,” Mountain Dew has removed the ads, saying, in a statement: “We apologize for this video and take full responsibility. We have removed it from all Mountain Dew channels and Tyler is removing it from his channels as well,” the soda company said.

Much like everything else Tyler is involved in, the real offense here is how boring, unfunny, and screechingly obvious it is. Someone should start a protest against that.

Watch the commercial here.
