Last Thursday, BULLETT visited French artist Miss Van’s solo exhibition Bailarinas at the Jonathan Levine Gallery– her first show in New York since 2006. The show featured her signature-eroticized poupées (French word for dolls) which are inspired by ballet culture. Unlike her last series, Twinkles- laden with tortured beauties and darkness- the Bailarinas’ poupées are more spirited, and engage the viewer with a strong confrontational gaze. We spotted a motley crew of skaters, bikers, tattoo-enthusiasts, and artists at the opening night. Upon arriving fashionably late, Miss Van sat down with BULLETT to talk about her current inspiration.
