Police and taggers have long had a contemptuous relationship, but the war on non-sanctioned wall-painters escalated in Miami this week, when 17-year-old-artist, skateboarder, and aspiring adult human Israel Hernandez-Llach was murdered by police.
The Miami Herald reports that Hernandez-Llach was spray-painting a McDonald’s on Tuesday when he was confronted by the police, who he then led on a chase. Finally cornering him, they tasered the boy in the chest, killing him.
“The officers were forced to use the Taser to avoid a physical incident,’’ Miami Beach Police Chief Ray Martinez said.
As Think Progress points out: “The Miami Police Department has undergone federal investigation for its misconduct twice in the past 7 years. The latest Department of Justice investigation found that officers routinely used excessive force when confronting suspects, leading to avoidable deaths.”
So, in summary, that’s one abandoned McDonald’s wall saved, one bright human life destroyed. Seems like a fair tradeoff.
Stay tuned for the worst people you know looking for evidence that Hernandez-Llach smoked pot or posed looking tough in photos and therefore deserved to be executed.
