Leave it Australia to give the internet the most hilarious, least effective marijuana PSA ever. In fact, “Stoner Sloth” is so ineffective as an anti-weed campaign, it will actually make you want to get high.
Developed by Saatchi & Saatchi (and paid for by the Australian Government, LOL), “Stoner Sloth” depicts a human-sized sloth, meant to represent a baked teenager. Stoner Sloth is put in a variety of regular teen scenarios – taking a test, having dinner with his family of regular humans and socializing with his human peers. Naturally, his slowness (both physically and mentally) coupled with his comically large claws make these everyday situations difficult for the sloth. It’s topped off with the slogan, “You’re Worse on Weed.” To make the ad extra appealing to millennials, Stoner Sloth has a tumblr, featuring gifs, stills and videos (and covered in hashtags).
Undoubtedly the folks behind the campaign intended for Stoner Sloth to get a few laughs, followed by an “aha moment” that results in stoners putting down their bongs. But, unfortunately for them (and fortunately for us), the result is unintentionally hilarious. Watching that goofy sloth bumble his way through life is funny when you’re sober, but even funnier when you’re stoned. Just ask the cult following of weed-enthusiasts that are making Stoner Sloth go viral.
Fans of weed’s newest mascot have made parody videos, a tumblr page and even a “Pass the Salt” t-shirt to immortalize their hero.
We reached out to Stoner Sloth for comment but expect he will be slow to reply.
