Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla have announced the birth of a baby girl, Max today. In a letter posted to their child on Facebook, the couple address many of the issues facing the world today, and lay out a plan for how they hope to make it a little bit better for her than it was for them.
“We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation.”
In order to help facilitate that, they’ve also announced the launch of their nonprofit the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. “Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities,” the write. It’s a charity that comes with a pretty steep pledge:
“We will give 99% of our Facebook shares — currently about $45 billion — during our lives to advance this mission. We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others.”
