You may have been following the case of Pussy Riot, the Russian feminist punks who’ve been defending themselves against nebulously defined charges of “hooliganism” for protesting the presidency of Vladimir Putin. It’s kind of an insane case, one that shows the exact level of political suppression found in the former Soviet Union. Last night, Madonna paused during a concert in Moscow to deliver a pro-Pussy Riot speech — an action that came stripped of any of her infamous theatrics (the seriousness aside, it’s kind of amusing to see the muscle-bound dancers behind her clapping in support while clad in some kind of homoerotic French military gear). It’s a few minutes long, but you should watch it yourself. Even though Madge obviously can’t have any tangible impact on whether Pussy Riot will get sent to prison, it’s still a fairly bold thing to challenge the president’s authority when you’re playing in the capital.
