In a recent CBS Sunday Morning news segment on French fashion editor Carine Roitfeld, American host Rita Braver meekly asks Mme. Roitfeld: “Is fashion really at heart about sex?” The two talking heads are close to the same age (Carine is 57, Rita is 64), each representing a stereotype in their mutual cultures’ approaches to growing old. Braver, wearing an American age-appropriate Chanel trickle down bouclé, asks the question as if it were naughty, while Roitfeld confidently replies with the word sé-duce, expressing even more through a cocked bushy brow and amused kohl eyes.
Former editor-in-chief of Paris Vogue, Carine Roitfeld has exported herself to America this season with a new namesake magazine, CR Fashion Book; a heavy coffee table book, Irreverent, published by Rizzoli; and a collaboration with MAC Cosmetics. It was just announced she will join Harper’s Bazaar as their global fashion director.
Carine’s signature look is saleable. Thick eyebrows, smoky eyes, very rock and roll, very sexy. CBS makes the Carine story all about age and sex. “At 57, French fashion icon Carine Roitfeld takes on New York,” is the segment title. Mentions of her being a grandmother: three. And the closing question: “When you look in the mirror, are you happy with what you see these days?”
The great thing about Carine is her irreverence, especially to age. She’s sexy and wrinkled and who cares. That’s why we love the MAC line. We genuinely want to look more like Carine. We just wished the ad for it did her beauty justice and wasn’t so airbrushed.
The MAC Carine Roitfeld line includes: Full Face Kit with four Eye Shadows, Cremeblend Blush, Eye Brows in Brunette, Kohl Power Eye Pencil, Fluidline, 49 Lash and two Mascaras. Tropical Mist Lipstick, Face and Body Foundation, Mineralize Concealer, Nail Lacquer and Brushes.
