It was all Anthony Gonzalez on night one of Coachella. The French wunderkind and M83 brainchild wasn’t the official headliner, but he might as well have been. The Black Keys had the main stage deservedly so, and they made good use of it, but a hearty chunk of festival-goers bypassed the big finale for the M83 set at the Mojave tent. They won. Gonzalez unleashed his trademark arsenal of shoegaze-y anthems to an adoring, overflowing crowd. The set was tailor made for the expansive desert night sky. Zola Jesus helped out on vocals, and by the time Gonzalez closed with his surprising, massive hit, “Midnight City,” the crowd was all his, fully and completely.
