The Chainsmokers, 2016’s most overhyped, underappreciated Pop/EDM outfit, decided to follow in the footsteps of everyone from Kanye West to Lady Gaga and get in on the high fashion tour merch racket. Unfortunately, a certain black hoodie they claim on Twitter is “exclusive to the tour” looks strikingly similar to one by Vetements from their Fall 2016 collection.
This is ironic for two reasons: first, the only thing that could make Vetements feel more overexposed than it already does is for a band like The Chainsmokers to knock off one of their lewks. I mean, the fact that The Chainsmokers even know what Vetements is does not bode well for an indie fashion house that built its reputation on being cooler-than-thou. Second, the brand is already embroiled in a controversy with something called Vetememes, which, as you would imagine, is solely dedicated to making snarky ripoffs of their wares. Basically, not only are we at peak Vetements, we’re at peak Vetements knockoffs as well.

Teen Vogue was the first to report on the Chainsmokers/Vetements controversy, and though neither party has released a statement, some people on Twitter are calling the band out. Looking at the hoodies side-by-side, it seems almost impossible for The Chainsmokers to claim it was all just some kind of crazy coincidence. Though to be fair, they’re both literally just black hoodies with strategically placed white and red lettering, so maybe it’s not worth getting too upset about from a design point of view. After all, there are more upsetting ripoffs in our midst, like the fact that everyone from Topshop to Forever 21 is trying to jack Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma style.
