After a five year hiatus, The xx is back. Today, the British dream pop trio dropped their latest album, I See You, following an amazing performance on BBC Live. During their appearance at The Live Lounge, the band played their new synth-pop ballad, “On Hold,” as well as a stripped-down cover of Rihanna and Drake’s “Too Good.” The smoky and somber rendition gives a whole new depth to the original.
This isn’t the first time The xx has inadvertently teamed up with Ri and Drake. Rihanna samples The xx’s track “Intro,” from their debut LP, on her 2011 single, “Drunk On Love.” Drake also sampled the band, using Jamie xx’s remix of Gil Scott Heron’s “I’ll Take Care Of U,” on his 2011 track, “Take Care.” Their version of “Too Good” turns the pop single into an emotional ballad, combining Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim’s duet with Jamie’s reverb-soaked piano. As a cover, it almost outshines Rihanna and Drake.
Listen to “Too Good,” here, at the 2:14:00 mark.
