The xx’s sophomore album, Coexist, is out in barely a month. Today, the band released “Chained,” the second teaser they’ve put out from the record. (Listen to the first one if you need a reminder.) Here, a gentle bass nudges the melody forward while singers Romy Madley-Croft and Oliver Sim stick to the brooding-on-top-of-sexy vocal delivery they’ve more or less made their calling card. There’s a release toward the end, as there often is with this band. With lyrics like “Whipped or chained / I ask you would you have stayed,” it’s easy to imagine this one popping up on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack. As one YouTube commenter notes: “roses are red / violets are blue / redtube is down / the xx will do.” (If you don’t know what Redtube is, please don’t Google it at work.) Coexist is out on September 11.
