Elliott Smith’s seminal 1997 album Either/Or, turns 20 this March. To celebrate, Olympia label Kill Rock Stars has teamed up with the late singer’s estate to release an expanded version of the record, featuring five live performances from the ’97 Yo Yo A Go Go Festival in Washington, and four unreleased songs, including the never-before-heard, “My New Freedom,” and studio versions of “New Monkey,” “I Don’t Think I’m Ever Going To Figure It Out” and “Bottle Up And Explode.” Today, the label dropped another new track from the re-issue, “I Figured You Out,” a poppy ballad filled with Smith’s poignant lyrics.
Originally written for singer/songwriter, Mary Lou Lord, who released a version on her ’96 album, Martian Saints, produced and recorded by Smith, himself, “I Figured You Out” is the perfect time capsule for Smith during the Either/Or-era. More produced than previous recordings, but still undeniably raw, the song combines the more upbeat guitars of tracks like “Rose Parade,” with existential lyrics on love, loss and fame, à la “Say Yes.” “But I’ll pick up around you and clear everything out,” he sings, “leave you where I found you—I figured you out.”
