In a post-truth Trumpocracy, no one can afford to stay silent. That’s the sentiment of ANOHNI‘s upcoming EP, Paradise, out March 17. The follow-up to last year’s HOPELESSNESS, ANOHNI tapped frequent collaborators Hudson Mohawke and Oneohtrix Point Never to deliver a political call to action with six tracks full of disruption and dissent. The title track, released today, is a catchy electro-pop banger elevated by the singer’s inimitable voice. An existential anthem, “Paradise” combines Mohawke’s heavy production with ANOHNI’s exploration of consciousness and the female identity during a political assault.
“Our new leaders hope to crush our spirits and expedite ecocide in the name of virulent progress, consumerism and false security,” she writes, in her artist statement. “Like Jihadis, many capitalists and Christians compulsively seek to facilitate a righteous ‘holy war,’ or apocalypse. For millennia, Men have enslaved women and attempted to appropriate female creative power, re-casting themselves as gods and creators. […] Only an intervention by women around the world, with their innate knowledge of interdependency, deep listening, empathy and self-sacrifice, could possibly alter our species’ desperate course.”
