This ad for something called a Ford Figo, showing sex-scandal-plagued ex-Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi absconding with a trunk full of gagged and bound women, has caused a lot of controversy for some reason I’m having a hard time putting my finger on. Oh right, the whole gagged and bound women in a trunk played for laughs thing. The image, created by an Indian ad agency called JWT India, who posted it online without official approval from Ford, has prompted apologies from both the firm who oversees them, and Ford, who said:
“We deeply regret this incident and agree with our agency partners that it should have never happened. The posters are contrary to the standards of professionalism and decency within Ford and our agency partners. Together with our partners, we are reviewing approval and oversight processes to help ensure nothing like this ever happens again.”
On the whole, it’s been a pretty bad few months for India’s reputation vis a vis rape. On the plus side, the Indian Parliament has just passed a huge new anti-rape law, “that makes stalking, voyeurism and sexual harassment a crime. It also provides for the death penalty for repeat offenders or for rape attacks that lead to the victim’s death.”
The ads are part of a series that shows notable figures, like Paris Hilton, kidnapping their enemies, in her case the Kardashians. Also some car-driving guy, who has only kidnapped other men, so I guess that’s ok?
