When Heath Ledger died unexpectedly in 2008, everyone’s heart simultaneously broke (this was long before a heartbreaking celebrity death occurred every week or so). In the late 90s/early 2000s, Heath Ledger was everything. Then, in the second act of his career, he shattered the norm by playing a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain and literally blew everyone’s mind with his iconic portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight, a role for which he posthumously won an Oscar.
Now, in a new Spike documentary, I Am Heath, we get an intimate look into the late actor’s life, via a slew of interviews with his friends (both famous and non-famous), family and, most notably, plenty of Heath’s own handheld footage (his real aspiration was to direct).
Even this 3-minute trailer is a powerful reminder of how talented, charismatic and, yes, handsome Heath Ledger was. Break out the tissues, it’s gonna be a tear-jerker.
