Lena Dunham, the self-proclaimed voice of this female generation, admits that she has one, tiny flaw when it comes to being a crusader for women’s rights: she hasn’t had an abortion. How dare she fight for reproductive rights having not gone through that experience herself, right?! Or at least this is how she made it seem on the latest episode of her podcast, Women of the Hour.
Dunham discusses the experience of visiting a Planned Parenthood in Texas and being asked to tell her own abortion story but, unfortunately, she doesn’t have one. What a poser!
I wanted to make it really clear to her that as much as I was going out and fighting for other women’s options, I myself had never had an abortion. And I realized then that even I was carrying within myself stigma around this issue. Even I, the woman who cares as much as anybody about a woman’s right to choose, felt it was important that people know that I was unblemished in this department.
After talking about how her mother and friends had all had abortions (how lucky are they?!) she drops the big one, saying, “Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had.”
What? Come on, Dunham. I believe that she’s saying on some level she feels less authentic for not having been through the very thing she’s fighting for, but I don’t think that anyone, including Lena Dunham, actually, for real wishes she had gone through the truly awful experience of having an abortion.
The only thing that could make that statement worse is if Lena Dunham had a child (could you imagine?!).
