This past week, Hollywood gossip magazine Us Weekly published a photo of Lena Dunham right next to the headline “20 Slim Down Diet Tips Stars Are Using.” Whoever okay’ed that layout must have somehow not anticipated the backlash they’d receive from the outspoken writer and body activist.
Last night, she clapped back in an Instagram post with the real details of her unintentional weight loss journey: Donald Trump. She also cited her “anxiety disorder,” and “worrying ceaselessly about the health and safety of women you know and women you don’t.” In the end, “I don’t want to be on this cover cuz it’s diametrically opposed to everything I’ve fought my whole career for,” she said, “and it’s not a compliment to me because it’s not an achievement.”

Although Lena has made headlines for saying some despicable things in the past, calling out gossip columns is always something we can get behind. She could have responded with a banal call for self-acceptance, or even with silence, but she kept it real. And even though she’s seemingly always walking the line between “yas!” and “absolutely not, please be quiet,” I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t miss her.
