Legendary New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham is in the hospital recovering from a stroke. After The Times‘ Sunday edition was released this weekend without Cunningham’s photos, a Times spokeswoman told Page Six, “Bill’s family and senior editors from The Times have been in regular contact with him.” She continued, “We believe that his recovery will be quick.”
Cunningham was the subject of a 2010 documentary, Bill Cunningham New York, and has been photographing the fashion elite since the early ’70s. Cunningham’s photos were the beginning of street style photography, capturing not only celebrities and designers, but also New Yorkers on the corner of 57th and 5th Avenue. He’s photographed all of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities and Manhattan’s even bigger personalities, simultaneously showcasing the grit of NYC’s true spirit.
We hope he’ll be back riding his bike again, soon.
