Fresh off the release of his latest Tree House mixtape, divine emperor and beguiling temptress LE1F, who unwittingly found himself in the news recently thanks to his off-the-cuff tweets about Wacklemore, seems confident and poised for long-term success. He’s also getting ready to release a new video for “Hush Bb”, a lush, twinkling landscape produced by Boody off the new tape, that costars my gorgeous roommate Ally and just wrapped in Philly over the weekend. If you still think of “Wut” first when you see LE1F’s name, it’s time to update your cultural lexicon and reassimilate into the now. Hel-LO.
The Tree House mixtape, which is as rich and spacy as a THC-laced brownie and boasts cameos from fellow scene darlings Junglepussy, Ian Isiah, and Rahel, reminds us how focused LE1F’s concept is, and that he has managed to curve the curse of one early indie breakout hit and forge a rather intriguing lane for himself in hip-hop. Stereogum says it “sounds like it’s from the future”, but IMO LE1F is planted firmly in the present, a pillar of the tough-yet-tender and yes, forward-thinking New York fashion and art community of now. (Someone should tell Stereogum the future isn’t real.)
Catch LE1F, along with Antwon and charming menace Lakutis, at Santos this Friday for his first NYC show since Tree House hit the streets. Should be fun.
