Lana Del Rey is the living embodiment of the American dream. She’s this internet year’s evidence that anyone with enough drive, a reasonable amount of talent, and a pretty face can realize their ambition of one day having millions of people complain about you online. Her new video for “National Anthem” winks at that new found icon status, with del Rey and rapper A$AP Rocky role-playing one of the most politically-charged scenes in American history, the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Lana, as you might imagine, looks amazing in her retro chic styles.
The rest of the Martha’s Vineyard-wave video plays out like a live action Instagram slideshow – grainy, washed-out pictures of flowers, cakes, boat rides, walks on the beach, and the hipster cosplay version of an inspiring political figure getting his brains blown out. You know, typical twee internet stuff.
The song itself is pretty enough, but the video seems designed to stir up pointless controversy. Is it offensive? Eh, enough to talk about the internet for three minutes or so. Still though, did I mention she looks really good?
