I’m actually almost scared to write this after the reaction my last Lana Del Rey post received—almost. But earlier today, Lana Del Rey released her newest single, the title track off her forthcoming album, Lust For Life, and it’s boring. I mean the Weeknd collab is part doo-wop, part pop banger and not completely insufferable. But that doesn’t mean it’s good. It’s neither, and in the world of music, being sub-par is the worst thing possible.
I know I’m going to get crucified for writing this article, and I also know plenty of people are already obsessing over this song, so at the end of the day, the joke’s on me—not Lana. But at a certain point, when will ‘fine’ stop being enough for her? I’m not saying she needs to totally reinvent herself (yet again), but even if her fans aren’t bored of the same old shtick—isn’t she? I definitely don’t measure songs based on whether or not they get stuck in my head (otherwise the Family Matters theme is literally brilliant), but “Lust For Life” does the exact opposite. I’ve listened to it probably 15 times, just trying to write this review, and I can’t remember one thing about it. In fact, every time I try, I sing “High By The Beach“—that should tell you something. It has all the makings of a hit single—built-up choruses, Lana’s signature whisper-sing, and The Weeknd sounds like Michael Jackson—but it falls flat. Maybe I’m just expecting too much from her. Or maybe it’ll grow on me. Though, I’m already 16 listens over it.
But if you’re not like me, aka bored AF, you can listen to it below.
