When they wrote “Call You Out” last year, Michelle Joy, of LA’s Cannons explains, the goal “was to create something that, lyrically, felt very real and grounded, but, musically, sounded more hypnotic.”
Consider that goal achieved here. The song, which related a situation we’ve all likely dealt with before, the moment when you realize you can simply no longer put up with his or her shit, is set within the context of a slinky, sexy declaration of love. “I find the juxtaposition of those two things beautiful. In ‘Call You Out’ I’m exploring that uncomfortable feeling you get when you’re afraid to speak your mind, but you prepare to spill your heart anyways, despite potential consequences. You’re kind of calling yourself out.”
“I’m a call you out,” she sings. “I’m a take you down.” Whoever she’s talking to is in for it.
