Casting spells with their self-labeled “reverb-soaked punked-out rock,” L.A. Witch is going to be huge in 2016. This week, the trio (guitarist/vocalist Sade Sanchez, bassist Irita Pai and drummer Ellie English) released a new song off their forthcoming 7-inch. The single, “Drive Your Car,” is one-half of the two track album Drive Your Car, due out Feb. 11 via Ruined Vibes/Black Mass Recordings.
Following “Kill My Baby Tonight,” L.A. Witch returns with another spooky surf rock banger. Neither distinctly masculine nor feminine, at times Sanchez’s haunting vocals bring to mind Bass Drum of Death’s John Barrett, and at other times Siouxsie Sioux circa 1982’s A Kiss In the Dreamhouse. Sanchez’s simple, repetitive lyrics give way to Pai’s eerie riffs and English’s ecstatic drumming.
Although many are quick to compare them to other all-girl bands like Savages or Bleached, L.A. Witch is paving the way for a psych-rock occult sound that’s uniquely their own. Listen, below:
