Twitter was atwitter last night when this Big Sean track “Control (HOF)” leaked on Funkmaster Flex’ radio show. Why? Because one main rap guy said he was the mainest of all the main rap guys, with Kendrick Lamar‘s verse put the entire industry on blast. This is notable because it’s the first time a rap guy has said that. Or did he, even? Seems like he’s declaring a 5 way tie for the best, which is kind of modest, relatively speaking. (We still like the freestyle he did for us better).
Here’s the verse in question:
I heard the barbershops be in great debates all the time:
“Who’s the best MC?” Kendrick, Jigga and Nas,
Eminem, Andre 3000—the rest of y’all
New niggas just new niggas; don’t get involved.
And I ain’t rockin no more designer shit;
White Ts and Nike Cortez, this is red Corvettes anonymous
I’m usually homeboys with the same niggas I’m rhyming with,
But this is hip hop and them niggas should know what time it is.
And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale
Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake
Big Sean, Jay Electron, Tyler, Mac Miller:
I got love for you all but I’m tryna murder you niggas,
Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you niggas,
They dont wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you niggas.
Pretty good, right? Or is it just some rap game fan service shit? Are people only excited about it because one guy said the names of other guys they’ve also heard of? Spider-Man showing up in an X-Men comic for two panels type shit. Card catalog motherfucker shit?
There’s only one way to find out if Kendrick will remain the undisputed king of the rap game: wait until another guy says he is the king and talk about it then.
