At this point it’s a goddamn right of passage for popular musicians to design shoes—Rihanna, Kanye and even Zayn Malick have taken the plunge and now Katy Perry is hopping on the bandwagon. Shoes are the new metal-inspired tour merch, I guess.
But Perry isn’t just cranking out a few pairs via a collab with an established shoemaker (perhaps all of them were already taken); she’s starting her own shoe line, called Katy Perry Footwear. The line will include sandals, sneakers, stilettos and pumps, and they’re going to be semi-affordable and colorful and if you have tweens they’re, like, totally gonna want them… Which sucks for you because when I say “semi-affordable” I mean they could run you as much as $300. Oh, and the sketches look like this… So yeah, good luck with that.
This at least *sort of* makes sense. While I don’t believe it was a lifelong dream of Perry’s to enter the affordable clothing market (as she claims to WWD), at least she has her own wacky aesthetic (I was going to say “sense of style” but undoubtedly it was cultivated by others) and a target market with a lot of disposable income (via their yuppie parents). She’s also in good hands; her partner is Global Brands Group, which launched such illustrious celeb brands as JLo and Sean Jean (no shade, both those brands are great).
So this is happening, I guess. Your move, Bieber.
