Following a seven-year stretch as K-Pop supergroup 2NE1, the four-piece outfit has officially disbanded, according to a statement released earlier this week by its label YG Entertainment. When 2NE1’s contract ended this spring, member Minzy made the decision to leave the group, however CL and Sandara Park still have solo deals locked in with YG.
“YG’s contract with 2NE1 ended in May 2016, Minzy decided to leave the group, and after much consultation with rest of the members, YG has decided to officially disband 2NE1,” YG Entertainment said. “2NE1 has been YG’s signature girl group for the past seven years, so YG is deeply saddened to let them go. However, it is better for 2NE1 members to continue on with their careers as solo artists rather than as a group. YG would like to thank all those in and out of Korea who have loved 2NE1 members and music.”
2NE1 is the only Korean girl group to tour United States arenas, having also broken records with its full-length album, Crush, which is the highest charting K-Pop album on the Billboard 200 to date. The crossover pop quartet’s global success helped kickstart CL’s solo career, guided by superstar manager Scooter Braun, most recently releasing together her viral dance single, “HELLO BITCHES,” in late 2015.
