While there are many methods of attracting attention to an under-the-radar brand, one surefire way is to recruit a Roitfeld.
Enter Kit Willow, who enlisted Julia Restoin Roitfeld to art direct the look book for her forthcoming spring collection, ‘Future Memories.’ Inspired by a sunset snapshot taken by her mother years ago, the season’s theme reflects that very dichotomy. “It’s very nostalgic,” says Willow in a behind-the-scenes video, “but then it’s [also] quite futuristic.”
The resulting looks are Aussie cool. Body-con shapes meld with beachy accents for the kind of haphazard chic you only see on legitimate surfer types. (As Prince Harry’s one-time rumored flame, Florence Brudenell-Bruce, put it, “It’s grungy, but it’s got a bit of everything.”) And while I can’t speak for the line’s patent pieces, slightly sheer frocks with gossamer-thin halters fit the bill for gotta-have-it summer wear.
Stylist Melanie Utzmann Huynh seems to have been the lynchpin between the brand and Roitfeld. “I first met Julia through her mother,” she trills in a thick French accent. “Within a year, we became, like, very good friends.”
To that end, Willow elaborates on the Roitfeld’s myriad of responsibilities: “Bringing the star in; how [the model is] standing, sitting; crop shots; long shots…”
