It was just announced yesterday that Joss Whedon has officially signed on for the Avengers sequel, as well as developing a TV show for Marvel set in the Avengers universe; but it’s looking like the director’s forthcoming involvement with the studio is going to go a little deeper than what’s suggested by those details alone. Apparently Whedon has signed an exclusive contract with Marvel that ties him to the studio through 2015, and in addition to his work with the Avengers sequel and the Marvel TV show, Whedon will “also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe,” according to a press release over at Slashfilm. Of course, it’s not surprising that the studio is eager to keep on the guy who brought in Marvel’s most profitable movie to date and one of the highest grossing films of all time, but what’s that last line mean? Probably just that they want him to put in some of that Whedon flavor that made The Avengers so successsful. It’s also likely that we’ll get treated to more than a few cameos by actors from the Whedonverse. Who else is looking for some Amy Acker/Alexis Denisof action?
