Beck’s new song, “I Just Started Hating Some People Today,” progresses in three stages: 1) lilting country ballad: 2) double-time punk exercise: 3) moody, lounge lizard denouement. So there’s a lot going on, and you have to wonder about the thought process that would lead Mr. Hansen to smush three songs together rather than let any of them breathe on their own. But “Hating,” aided by former White Stripes front man Jack White and former Jack White wife Karen Elson, is distinctive despite the dissonance; as it turns out, listening to Beck vocalize all of his murder fantasies in a slightly old-timey Southern voice is more charming than confusing. “I just started wanting to punch your face,” he sings, “You might want to wear a helmet just in case.” Like I said, charming. You can buy the 7” single for “Hating” at Third Man Records.
