The Hunger Games finally hits theatres tomorrow, which means its leading lady, Jennifer Lawrence, has been automatically catapulted to the top of the A-List. And with that kind of power comes great responsibility, especially where fashion is concerned. From now on, Lawrence will be the focal point of any red carpet she steps on, which means her sartorial choices will be picked apart online and on shows like E!’s Fashion Police. But so far, Lawrence has nailed it. It’s not just the Tom Ford and Calvin Klein dresses she’s been wearing on The Hunger Games grand circuit, but it’s how she’s wearing them.
Watching her on Letterman the other night, the 21-year-old never missed a beat and was both candid and stirringly self-deprecating. She’s awkward; in that sort of endearingly vulnerable way that makes boys fall in love with her and girls want to be her best friend. She likened herself to a “shaking, peeing Chihuahua” on the red carpet, who, because she has to constantly be reminded to “suck in” halfway down, is frequently Googling herself, worried she looks like a “troll.” She then laughingly jokes, “The movie is great, but their biggest mistake was me. No one’s going to want to see that idiot swing from trees!”
Lawrence only recently began her major red-carpet marathon, and so far she’s proved she’s all about experimenting and risk taking, wearing everything from dark and frilly Louis Vuitton at the 2011 Golden Globes to a sleek, tomato-red Calvin Klein at the Oscars. And with all eyes on her, the attention brings the obvious pressure of dressing to impress, and carving out her own style niche in a sea of often bland and boring choices. So far, we’re impressed.
