Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild” Finds Beauty in Anarchy

Leave it to ‘Ye and Jay—brothers until the very end—to steal Baz Luhrmann’s thunder. The week after the Australian director notably featured their song “No Church in the Wild” in his trailer for The Great Gatsby, the dynamic duo have offered their own take on their own song, with a slo-mo riot that is heavy on Molotov cocktail, and light on the DiCaprio side part. As the Phil Manzanera guitar sample noodles along, police in riot gear beat protesters, and looters smash shop windows before a final explosion of sparks, lasers, and fire—and a marauding elephant joins the party. (And make no mistake, this is one hell of a party.) You should be warned that neither Kanye West or Jay-Z make appearances in the clip (although someone who looks like Kanye opens it up), which was directed by Roman Gavras. The French filmmaker is best known for spearheading M.I.A.’s controversial clip for “Born Free” and all we can say is, someone get this guy to Hollywood already.
