Though fairly definitive rumors as early as October put Nicolas Ghesquiere at the design helm of Vuitton in the wake of Marc Jacobs’ recent exit, it has officially been confirmed via WWD today by a spokesperson from the house that he has indeed been hired. What can we expect from Ghesquiere for Louis Vuitton?
“Louis Vuitton has always incarnated for me the symbol of ultimate luxury, innovation and exploration,” Ghesquiere said in a statement. “I am very honored of the mission that I am entrusted with, and proud to join the history of this great maison. We share common values and a vision.” Translation: Ze checks, please cut zem. We’re apt to let Ghesquière’s first creations for the house speak to how he’s truly feeling.
Will we see the cold, sometimes alien architecture that made him a favorite at Balenciaga? Or will he surprise us with a new approach, as he seldom seems short on the level of concept that other mainstream luxury designers merely aspire to? Only a bit of time will tell, but if anyone can breathe life into the stuffy, overpriced sinkhole of Vuitton womenswear, it’s Ghesquière. Godspeed, good sir.
