You may have read about “bronies,” adult male fans of My Little Pony who’ve co-opted the engaging children’s cartoon show into just another collection of nerd signifiers—more characters to follow, more lore to obsess over, more t-shirts to collect and fanart to draw. It’s incredibly easy to make fun of bronies because they are, after all, grown men who are unabashedly devoted to a television show made for grade schoolers, but the sap in me thinks it’s nice whenever any group of people have a space they feel safe in; I recognize a lot of these types from my own dalliances with intense fan cultures, and know their appeal for people who otherwise feel lonely, awkward and out of place. That said, this collection of highlights from this year’s My Little Pony convention is fucking fascinating as a microcosm for the way nerds have fun in 2013. There are furries, dubstep DJs, women dressed like anime cats, men dressed like youth group ministers, someone finger tapping their unnecessarily ornate guitar, and more. (Keep your eyes peeled for the guy who falls off the stage at the beginning.) Shout out to bronies, wherever you are.
